Product Market Regulation, Firm Selection and Unemployment

چکیده
Product Market Regulation, Firm Selection and Unemployment This paper analyzes the effect of Product Market Regulation (PMR) on unemployment in a search model with heterogeneous multiple-worker firms. In our setup, PMR modifies the distribution of firm productivities, thereby affecting the equilibrium rate of unemployment. We distinguish between PMR related to entry costs and PMR that generates recurrent fixed costs. We find that: (i) higher entry costs raise the rate of unemployment mainly through our novel selection effect, (ii) higher fixed costs lower unemployment through the selection effect and increase it through the competition effect analyzed in Blanchard and Giavazzi (2003). We propose econometric evidence consistent with the unemployment effects of sunk versus recurring costs. JEL Classification: E24, J63, L16, O00

Employment Protection, Product Market Regulation and Firm Selection
Employment Protection, Product Market Regulation and Firm Selection This paper analyzes the effect of labor and product market regulation in a dynamic stochastic equilibrium with search frictions. Modeling multiple-worker firms allows us to distinguish between the exit-and-entry (extensive) margin, and the hiring-and-firing (intensive) margin. We characterize analytically how both margins depen...
متن کاملThe Missing Link: Product Market Regulation, Collective Bargaining and the European Unemployment Puzzle∗
We contribute to the growing literature which aims to link product market regulation and competition to labor market outcomes, in an attempt to explain the divergent US and continental European labor market performance over the past two decades. The main contributions of this paper are threefold. First, we show that the choice of bargaining regime is crucial for the effect of product market com...

Globalization and Labor Market Outcomes: Wage Bargaining, Search Frictions, and Firm Heterogeneity We introduce search unemployment à la Pissarides into Melitz’ (2003) model of trade with heterogeneous firms. We allow wages to be individually or collectively bargained and analytically solve for the equilibrium. We find that the selection effect of trade influences labor market outcomes. Trade l...

متن کاملMarket-Product Strategic Planning by Applying Expert Systems
In this research, a new method for market-product strategic planning is presented. In this method, an expert system is designed on the basis of identifying important factors that are effective in a firm and analyzing the logical relations between them. The objective is to develop a decision support system (DSS) for helping managers to make strategic decisions. DDS can serve as suitable replacem...
